WhatsApp Messenger, the incredibly popular
app that lets you send text messages for free
looks to be getting a serious upgrade in the
near future. Recent screenshots which have
been leaked to the media show the WhatsApp
service running on an iPhone with iOS 7
– and what’s unique in these pictures are the
mute, message, and speaker buttons which
have been completely non-existent before now.
There’s also a red “end call” button at the
bottom of the picture.
but it seems like WhatsApp is branching out
into the voice calls department.
This may or may not be a big surprise to you,
as WhatsApp did announce they had plans to
offer a voice calling feature sometime in the
year 2014. However, no one really knew when
it would happen or what the finished product
would look like. To be fair, we still don’t know
exactly when it will be available, but it doesn’t
sound like it’ll be too much longer.
Texts And Calls For Free?
Obviously, since this is all still up in the air,
we don’t know exactly how it’s going to work.
Currently with the WhatsApp service, (at least
for iOS users) it’s free for the first year and
then it costs $0.99 for the next year and so
on. It’s unknown if that price will stay the
same once the voice calling feature is added or
if it will slightly increase.
One thing we do know is that WhatsApp might
even get more popular – as of right now, there
are approximately 465 million people around
the world who use the app. And, once “free”
voice calling is added alongside of free text
messaging, that number is sure to increase.
One can only wonder what kind of effect this
will have on regular cell phone service plans
when more and more customers find ways to
get their services for free. WhatsApp is
available on iOS, Android, and other platforms
as well.
