Verve cards to be accepted on PayPal

Plans are being concluded to add Verve cards to the accepted cards for integration on PayPal, according to Chuma Ezirim, head of e-business at FirstBank Nigeria.
According to Ezirim, PayPal cannot afford to leave out Verve cardholders in Nigeria.
“Verve cards will soon be added – 18 million issued, 13 million are active and integration is happening in few months. FirstBank controls 35 per cent of issued Verve cards,” Ezirim said.
He said currently only cards issued by Visa and MasterCard are accepted, but in addition FirstBank’s customers can open a PayPal account directly from the bank’s website. When they do this, he said they get automatic verification and higher limits.

How to lock your Google Chrome profile with your Google password

Many computer systems are not overly well protected when someone else manages to get physical access to the computer. This can be a family member, a colleague at work, your boss, or a thief who just stole your laptop at Starbucks.
While user accounts are usually secured by a password, the computer may not always be locked which in turn means that a third-party can access most programs, files and information on it unhindered.
If you take web browsers for example, they are not protected by passwords. The only thing that you can do in most is to add password protection to authentication information, but that is about it.
Chrome just like Firefox supports profiles that you can create. They can be used by the same person, for instance to separate work and entertainment from one another, but also by different family members or work colleagues on the same system.
Google has added a feature to Chrome recently that allows you to lock down the browser using your Google password. While that may sound like a good idea, it has implications which you need to know about:
  1. Since you are linking your Google account to a profile, it is necessary to stay logged in whenever you use that profile in Chrome. This means that you are always signed in to Google when you use the feature.
  2. While you can lock your Chrome profile so that it cannot be accessed, you too cannot use Chrome at that time.
  3. You need to manually lock Chrome, there is no option to do this automatically (for instance when the computer goes to sleep or is turned off).

  4. The feature is experimental at the time of writing which means that it may or may not be integrated natively in the browser.
  5. Load chrome://flags/#enable-new-profile-management in the address bar and switch the preference to enabled. This enables the browser's new profile management.
  6. Click on the restart button to apply the change and relaunch the browser.
You will see a profile menu at the top right corner of the screen on restart

  • Here you need to sign-in to a Google account using your account credentials.
  • Once you have done so, you see your profile picture and name listed in the menu.
  • Here you also find the lock button which you can click on to lock down the browser.
  • This switches Chrome to the user manager window that displays options to sign in again, create a new account, or browse as guest.
  • This page will remain until you sign in again or use one of the other options provided on the screen. It remains active when you close Chrome so that you can use it to lock down your browser profile completely using the feature.
Another interesting option that is provided by this new user management feature is the option to make available a guest browsing mode to others.
This is excellent news if you don't want third-parties to use your browser profile -- see open tabs, bookmarks, visited websites and more -- without switching to a different browser to provide them with that option.
Cut the link
You can cut the link at any time by open chrome://settings/ in the browser and clicking on the "disconnect your Google Account" option there.
To go back to the old profile manager, open the chrome://flags/#enable-new-profile-management preference again and set it to disabled. Restart the browser afterwards and the profile menu is gone from Chrome once again.

New WhatsApp Screenshots Show Voice Calling

WhatsApp Messenger, the incredibly popular
app that lets you send text messages for free
looks to be getting a serious upgrade in the
near future. Recent screenshots which have
been leaked to the media show the WhatsApp
service running on an iPhone with iOS 7
– and what’s unique in these pictures are the
mute, message, and speaker buttons which
have been completely non-existent before now.
There’s also a red “end call” button at the
bottom of the picture.

Hmm…I’m no expert,
but it seems like WhatsApp is branching out
into the voice calls department.
This may or may not be a big surprise to you,
as WhatsApp did announce they had plans to
offer a voice calling feature sometime in the
year 2014. However, no one really knew when
it would happen or what the finished product
would look like. To be fair, we still don’t know
exactly when it will be available, but it doesn’t
sound like it’ll be too much longer.
Texts And Calls For Free?
Obviously, since this is all still up in the air,
we don’t know exactly how it’s going to work.
Currently with the WhatsApp service, (at least
for iOS users) it’s free for the first year and
then it costs $0.99 for the next year and so
on. It’s unknown if that price will stay the
same once the voice calling feature is added or
if it will slightly increase.
One thing we do know is that WhatsApp might
even get more popular – as of right now, there
are approximately 465 million people around
the world who use the app. And, once “free”
voice calling is added alongside of free text
messaging, that number is sure to increase.
One can only wonder what kind of effect this
will have on regular cell phone service plans
when more and more customers find ways to
get their services for free. WhatsApp is
available on iOS, Android, and other platforms
as well.
What do you think? Do you currently use
WhatsApp Messenger? Are you excited about
voice calling coming in the future?

China Launched 'china Operating System' (COS) To Break Android And Ios Monopoly

China has always tried to support its
homegrown tech industry and even the
security concerns over U.S. secret surveillance
which gives Chinese Government another
reasons to trust domestic vendors. Many other
countries are also in favor to develop their
own technology industries to reduce their
dependence on U.S.

The Government of China is not too fond of
foreign mobile operating systems and therefore
are trying to break the monopoly of Microsoft,
Apple and Google in the country.
This week at an event in Beijing, China has
unveiled its own Linux-based mobile platform,
dubbed China Operating System (COS),
developed as a joint effort between a company
'Shanghai Liantong', ISCAS (Institute of
Software at the Chinese Academy of Sciences)
and the Chinese Government.
According to COS website, it is designed for
PCs, Smartphones, tablets, TVs, set-top boxes
and other smart appliances. It runs Java
applications, supports HTML5 and can run over
100,000 apps.
At the launch event, the head of the ISCAS
criticized Apple’s iOS for being a closed
ecosystem, Android for its fragmentation
issues, and Windows Phone for its poor
security.
According to the promo video, the China
Operating System (COS) interface and functions
are much like Android, specifically very similar
to HTC’s Sense 5.
However, many Chinese users are criticizing
this operating system on social media sites,
“What does COS stand for? COPY OTHER
SYSTEM?… But it really does look like a fusion
of the Apple, Android, Symbian, and
Blackberry operating system,”

Another user commented, "It’s not open
source because they’re terrified that others
will see that the source code is the same as
Android, and accuse them of cheating the
government out of money,"
Four years back, China once tried to create its
own Linux-based, open mobile operating
system called "OPhone or OMS (Open Mobile
System)", but it was failed to gain popularity
and discontinued after 2011.

New USB Type C Connector Lets You Insert USB In Any Orientation

One of the chief annoyances about USB cables is that they can only be plugged in one way—and you will invariably try to plug a USB cord in the wrong way at least once before succeeding. That's one of the problems the USB Promoter Group hopes to solve with the just-announced USB Type-C connector, which like Apple's Lightning connector will be reversible so that there's no "wrong" way to plug it in. The new connector is described as a "supplement to the USB 3.1 specification" and its design should be finalized by the middle of 2014.

The Type-C USB connector is meant to be used to deliver power, data and video across all devices without the need for another connector, the group said. It will however not work with existing USB plugs. The specification will define new-to-existing cables and adapters to allow users to use their existing products, the group said.

iPhone 5 case lights up when you have a call

New iPhone 5 cases does not only serve as protective layer but also a case that combines protection with festive, blinky coolness.

The case is available in a variety of styles for iPhone 5/5S and iPhone 5C, the LED Cover Flashing Clear Case offers a seemingly transparent protective shell for your handset.

The case will light up to display a nifty embedded pattern every time you receive a call, text message, e-mail, or anything else that would normally trigger an alert.

It's pretty cool, especially considering that it requires no additional battery power (other than what the LED already draws).
